Description

Choose a film or novel with which you are very familiar – it can be any  kind of movie or book. Apply the 12 Steps of the Hero's Journey to your  selection; remember, not all elements will show up in your chosen work,  so not all blocks will necessarily be filled out. However, there should  be enough to show the three main stages in your analysis. You can do  this in a Word file and then copy and paste, or directly in your thread.

Here are some other strong examples of films and novels that make use of the Hero's Journey:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone (book or film)
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (book or film)
  • Star Wars (film)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (film)
  • Braveheart (film)
  • Twilight Saga (book or film)
  • Finding Nemo (film)
  • Inside Out (the new Pixar film) or almost any Disney or Pixar film, for that matter
  • Avatar(film)
  • The Old Man and the Sea (book)
  • Moses, Samson, Jesus Christ (book)

Some people attribute this to the Briton culture considering that most of them were Protestant. In a concept known as Protestant work ethic, they believed that hard work, thriftiness, and discipline was part of service both to humanity and to God (Duiker, 2014). They were, therefore, risk takers and had a belief that the material rewards were only a manifestation of what awaited them in heaven. Besides, in the eighteenth century, there had been increased food production due to advancements in the agricultural sector. There were fewer workforces coupled with the feeding of more people at reduced prices. Consequently, most of their income was used in the purchase of manufactured goods (Duiker, 2014). In addition, the growing population provided labor for the developing industries. The active growth in national wealth was also significant in the promotion of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. Expansion in trade for over two periods provided capital for the purchase of new equipment and industries. The country also had access to cheap materials from regions such as Asia and America. Moreover, Britain had a well-developed and active central bank as well as adaptable credit facilities owing to the entrepreneurial nature of most early factory owners (Duiker, 2014). Such individuals would make profits in case of any opportunities and as a result, garnered massive support from the government. Britain also had an abundant supply of raw materials such as water, iron, and coal that were significant in the processing, manufacturing, and transport sectors. The construction of roads, bridges, and water canals facilitated the transportation of raw FACTORS FOR INDUSTRIALIZATION IN GREAT BRITAIN 3 materials to major industrialized regions such as the Atlantic Coast, London, and the Midlands. There was also easy access to facilities owing to Britain's size. Lastly, towards the end of the eighteenth century, the invention of the power loom, flying shuttle and the spinning jenny favored the large-scale production of textile. The steam engine, one of the most significant inventions at the time, significantly affected the industrial revolution (Duiker, 2014). It depended on coal, which was available in large quantities.
