Emphysema is generally a disorder of the lung that causes shortness of breath. It is
possible that a person might have emphysema for several years without them noticing any given
signs or symptoms (Emphysema, 2012). The physical manifestation, which is the main sign of
emphysema is shortness of breath. The shortness of breath is not instantaneous as it starts
gradually. An affected person might generally begin to avoid activities that make them run short
of breath often. The major problem is not the shortness of breath, but withdrawal from the events
that cause such persons to run short of breath. Severe symptoms of emphysema include one’s
lips and fingernails turning grey or blue with exertion and finally being less mentally alert.
