Relating to the class: I feel that this article relates to the material we have discussed in class because this article clearly shows examples that show that rehabilitation can be successful, as was the case with Desamour in the piece. Also I feel that this article also shows how when 1 1 Danny Aguirre SOCI/CRMJ 355.601 November 30, 2011 delinquents commit serious crimes such as murder they do not fully comprehend what they have done because when such individuals were interviewed for the article they responded with similar answers such as “looking back I cant believe that was me”. This all leads me to believe that juveniles show be rehabilitated rather than harshly punished. Discussion questions: Do you guys feel that justice was appropriately administered in Bahr's case? Do you all feel that all juvenile cases involving murder should be handled as adult cases? Mears' article consisted of the stories of two individuals in the Philadelphia area who were similar in age but received different sentences for murders. Mears described the story of Edwin Desamour, who had been arrested and charged with third degree murder of 17-year-old Sean Daily, who was savagely beaten with a bat. Desamour was sentenced to 7 to 20 years in prison. Upon his release on parole he made it his objective to help troubled teens avoid similar fates. The second of the two stories consisted of the story of Brian Bahr, who at 17-years-old was sentenced to life w without parole for the beating, rape and strangulation of a 12-year-old girl. In both cases the suspects where tried as adults which, eventually lead the Supreme Court to get involved and question whether or not "juvenile offenders who commit violent felonies deserve tough prison sentences -- especially life without parole". The article included many skeptics that criticize the harsh treatment of teens in Pennsylvania and would like the current law to change towards a more rehabilitative model. The issues is still currently being debated. Relating to the class:
