Introduction
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster is a book written by Jon
Krakauer in 1997. The book details Krakauer’s experience of the Mount Everest disaster which
saw the death of eight mountain climbers after they were left stranded by a massive storm for
days. Despite having given up on mountain climbing activities years before writing the book,
Krakauer embarks on a journey to climb the mountain to honor the fallen climbers and to give
the reader a glimpse of what may have happened during the 1996 disaster. In writing the book,
Krakauer uses various literary techniques to enhance the themes of his story and to make his
work more attractive to the audience. By using literary elements such as imagery, smiles,
metaphor, allusions, paradox, and parallelism, the author is able to draw the reader into the traits
of the characters, thus enabling the reader to have a better understanding of the choices that these
characters make during the mountain climbing session.
