PART I: SHORT ANSWER

Identify historical reasons why tradespersons and artisans have sometimes been
considered to be second class citizens.
Social inequality and social stratification are dominant ideologies despite the fact that
people have equal chances of opportunity and condition (Brym, 2007). The caste systems are
one of the reasons why artisans and tradespersons are referred to as second class citizens.
People are fixed on rigid status’ that define artisans as low economically thus attract a lower
level of honour they receive in terms of education, marriage, among other social and
economic aspects. Merchants in the early European feudal systems were seen as low-class
citizens because they did not produce anything for themselves. Today, these ideologies still
hold.
Provide examples of instances when concern for the "common" person surfaced.
Common good concerns try to justify the phrase ‘equality of opportunity, equality of
conditions.’ One of the most notable instances leading to a common advantage was
Roosevelt’s cheap and affordable health care system. In the early 1900s, President Roosevelt
believed that a strong country is not built by sick people. The initiative gave birth to health
insurance. Of particular interest is the desire by federal governments to build effective
infrastructures to link common people to the rest of the world. For example, the first longdistance rail launched in Maryland 1827 gave craftsmen and merchants an opportunity to new
market opportunities.
Recognize historical efforts that contributed to experiential learning.
