My thought process is that items that are patented can be used by others.  Just like Edison and the light bulbs is what I am saying.  Trademarks are identified by what they are and applied to the said business.  So when people see the logo they know the business is what I am saying.  Am I off base with my understanding of patents?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

definitively speaking, is a set of exclusive rights granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or assignee for a limited period of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure of an invention. Trademark are sole related to the logo, symbols, or any other graphical representation of the company. Patents protect the process whereas trademarks protect the visual distinctions associated to the patent. Some companies only have trademarks for their logo.
