1. The Great Depression began on October 24, 1929, known as Black Thursday. Although there are several factors that led to the depression, the most notably was the collapse of the US Stock Market. It is believed that this was caused by the manipulation of JP Morgan et. al. and the lack of action by the US Federal Reserve to prevent it. As a consequence, home prices dropped, unemployment went up by more than 25% and inflation skyrocketed. Millions were left homeless, jobless, hopeless. The Great Depression was felt around the world for nearly a decade (The Great Depression of 1929. Nov. 1990).2. Joseph Stalin implemented three 5-year plans which began in 1929. Its main objective was to improve the heavy industry of the nation, mainly the increased production of coal, oil, electricity and steel. A Nationwide collectivization was implemented targeting the prosperous peasants of the time. Overall, the plans were a success. The Soviet Union did become a world power in the Industrial world, second only to The United States (The Five Year Plans of The Soviet Union. Feb. 2000).3.
