SOSC 3040 Corporate Social Responsibility Assignment #2 Due: July 29 in lecture. Weight: 20% Length: approximately 1500-2000 words. Topic: CSR codes in global supply networks How effective are CSR measures such as voluntary supply chain labour standards codes and certification schemes in improving the lives of workers in developing countries? In addressing that question, you should consider the practical and political obstacles to formulating, implementing and enforcing effective CSR measures, and arguments for and against the view that such codes, even if successfully implemented and enforced, would be of marginal benefit or would do more harm than good. You are not required or expected to use materials other than assigned course readings, and you are expected to make use of all readings that are relevant to the points you are making. The readings assigned for lectures 15-19 will be most directly applicable. Skilfully incorporating concepts from other units of the course (such as those relevant to the first assignment, and on normative CSR debates) is a plus, but avoid padding the paper with undigested or weakly integrated material. Your paper should be coherent and well organized at the over-all, paragraph and sentence levels. For general essay writing advice see SPARK, and also these tips on thesis statements. For grading criteria see the attached rubric. Please use a standard scholarly citation style such as APA. Submission instructions The assignment should be submitted in hard copy in the July 29 lecture (if you have not already submitted it in tutorial). It should also be uploaded to Turnitin (via Moodle) by 11:59 pm that day. The file uploaded to Turnitin should be saved as a Word document, as we have found that Turnitin can’t open some other formats. The format of the hard copy should be as follows. There should be a title page with only the title, your name and tutorial number. Your name should not appear elsewhere in the paper (i.e., not at the beginning, and no running head). Print and attach the rubric below to the end of your hard copy. Note: It is your responsibility to ensure that the version of the paper you submit and upload is your intended final version. Please double check before submitting. Turnitin will allow you to re-submit up to the deadline. You are therefore advised to upload before the deadline and look at the originality report. After the deadline, the system will only allow you to upload only if you have not already done so, and only once, and that submission will be flagged as late. Running Head: Corporate Social Responsibility.
Corporate Social Responsibility Codes in Global Supply Networks.
Us use of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices and concepts like the
voluntary codes of conduct have tremendously grown over the past decade, this provides the
opportunity to examine the dynamics and the impact of labor standards with regards to stemming
labor abuses in developing countries (Yu, 2015). Despite political obstacles, CSR measures have
been effective in improving the lives of workers in a developing country. This has utilized an indepth study of the implemented codes of conduct with regards to labor regulations/standards and
its effectiveness according to global production systems labor standards.
Multinational companies constitute external and internal stakeholders and shareholders.
These stakeholders include employees, governments, partners, customers, unions, media and
NGO’s. All these participants mount pressure on companies due to the growing concerns of
environmental conditions and social conditions of production locations, especially in developed
countries where there are limited rules.
The development of multimedia communication technology has largely escalated this
concern. The ability of small portable devices like smartphones to capture and share multimedia
information over the internet has made it difficult for companies to cover unethical practices
from their consumers. Most companies have been exposed while the rest risk exposure due to the
increased rate of flow of information across cultural and national boundaries. Multimedia has
facilitated the exposure of multinational companies’ irresponsible practices. Most companies in
developing countries have been victims of irresponsible practices such as poor working
conditions, use of child labor in production, violation of labor rights, racial and gender
discrimination among others. Well known is the child labor is the Cocoa production in Ghana
(Bertrand & de Buhr, 2015).

Running Head: Corporate Social Responsibility.
The corporate social responsibility of multinational companies is not limited to its
corporation only, they also consider their trading partners concerning labor practices ...
