This week, you will  research on the city  Mumbai ,in India. You will examine the development of the city or urban area from an anthropological perspective by exploring the different forces that have impacted the development of the urban area and the people in it. This profile will also be utilized in your Final Research Project in this course. The scholarly article  Falzon, M. (2004). Paragons of lifestyle: gated communities and the politics of space in Bombay. City & Society may be helpful in supporting your city profile and serve as one of the required resources.

You should address the topics below in three to four double-spaced pages, excluding title page and reference page(s).

  1. Outline the origin and development of the city or urban area.
    Questions to consider:
    • How, when and why was the city founded?
  2. Discuss the impact of migration, globalization, and transnationalism.
    Questions to consider:
    • How has migration, globalization, and/or transnationalism affected the development of the city?
  3. Discuss the effects of class, gender, ethnicity, and power differentials.
    Questions to consider:
    • How are class, gender, ethnicity, and power differentials expressed in the culture of the city?
    • Who makes up the dominant social group(s)?
  4. Identify at least one marginalized group, and identify the forces of power and/or economics that marginalize the group.
    Questions to consider:
    • What groups are marginalized, and by what forces?
    • What features of the economic or political system help keep these groups in a marginalized position?
