The last decades of the 19th century in Europe encountered an extensive scope of
scientific, intellectual, and cultural challenges. At the time, Europe faced a wide range of
political and economic upheavals which had adverse effects on the relationship among the major
European powers1. Conversely, apart from the conflicts which existed during the time, it is also
important to note that there were significant advances in scientific and intellectual fields and
these changes had adverse effects on the cultural dynamics of Europe. One of the areas where
science played an important role was in medicine. Before the 1870s, many doctors believed that
diseases were caused by bad blood, and as a result, there was a use of traditional approaches in
handling the illnesses2. As knowledge was being advanced in the field of medicine, there were
also improvements being made in other fields of research. The knowledge which the Europeans
acquired during this time helped them to brag and to justify their perceived superior economic
and social status3. During the same period, society started to gain a better understanding of the
nature of the relationship between humanity and nature. Using the evolution theory advanced by
Darwin, Europe started advancing its understanding of racial hierarchies and the manner in
which it affected the relationship among the various groups of people in society. Based on
Darwin's theory, many people across Europe started believing in the idea of social Darwinism,
which indicated that only white males had achieved the apex of human evolution. All the other
groups, including white females, were inferior due to the fact that they were still in the process of
