Description

Answer the following questions and follow the rubric for this assignment. Answers should be paraphrased and cited using APA formate:

  • What is the action if this medication?
  • What is the indication of this medication?
  • What are the ALL the common side and Adverse Effects effects of this medication?
  • Create an ethical dilemma about this medication. Use the considerations after the medication as a guide when developing the ethical dilemma.
  • Create a ethical question that can be discussed in class; the question should be drawn from the ethical dilemma you created
  1. Alfuzosin (Uroxatral): Consider risks of inducing urgency or bradycardia in a clients with dementia issues
  2. Benztropine (Cogentin): Consider harms that can occur with comorbidities like glaucoma or BPH
  3. Albuterol: Consider harms that can occur is asthmatic children are in charge of their own inhalers
  4. Atenolol: Consider harms that could occur if heart rate was low or patient was asthmatic
  5. Lorazepam (Ativan): Consider vulnerability issues related to sedation and induction of memory loss
  6. Oxycodone (Oxycontin): Consider addiction, drug seeking and patient vulnerability in impaired nurses
  7. Amitriptyline (Elavil): Consider vulnerability issues with risk of suicidal overdose given anticholinergic effects
  8. Haloperidol (Haldol): Consider risks of chemical sedation, especially long term risks
  9. Lithium: Consider risks of mismanagement by clients whose behaviors are unpredictable
  10. Phenytoin (Dilantin): Consider risks of Class D in young women vs risks of going without anti-epileptics
  11. Kava – kava (Ava pepper): Consider risks of availability of compounding poorly controlled over the counter sedatives
  12. Sumatriptan (Imitrex): Consider risks of cerebral ischemia when giving vasoconstrictors for migraine control
  13. Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) : Consider risks of impaired function when nurses take muscle relaxants
  14. Corticosteroids/Prednisone: Consider long term effects, when other immune suppressors are too expensive to access.

Running Head: DRUG USE
Alfuzosin (Uroxatral)

Action

Alfuzosin is an alpha blocker that works by blocking the receptors in the smooth muscle
and arteries which leads to relaxation of urinary bladder muscles and muscles of an enlarged
prostate making urination easier and less painful (Cunha, 2019).

Indication

Alfuzosin is mostly given as a treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia
(enlarged prostate). This includes painful or difficulty in urination, urgency and increased the
frequency

Adverse side effects

The common side effects of Alfuzosin include dizziness, postural hypotension, and
hypertension, headache, and syncope due to a sudden drop in blood pressure or heart rate.

Ethical dilemma

A client with dementia, which is associated with reduced heart rate, has enraged prostate
and is referred to the pharmacy by the doctor for Alfuzosin, which one of the common side effects
is syncope and bradycardia. The ethical dilemma to the pharmacist is whether the action of the
drug (reducing pain and muscle relaxation) exceeds the harm for the patient due to the adverse
side effects.

Ethical question? Should Uroxatral be prescribed for persons with dementia considering
that it could lead to induced urgency?

Benztropine

Action

Benztropine is an anticholinergic that works by blocking acetylcholine in the body. This
helps in reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Indication

According to the U.S Library of Medicine (2019), Benztropine is used to treat symptoms
of Parkinson’s disease characterized by difficulties in movement, balance, and muscle control. It
can also be used to treat involuntary movements resulting in suspected side effects due to other
drugs such as Chlorpromazine.

Side Effects

Most of the side effects are anticholinergic including tachycardia, constipation, dry mouth,
nausea and vomiting, vision changes, effects on the nervous system including hallucination,
disorientation and an increase in the severity of pre-existing psychotic symptoms.

Ethical dilemma

Benztropine is contraindicated for patients with hypersensitivity, and closed-angle
glaucoma as it can lead to mydriasis, and an increase in intraocular pressure. A client with
glaucoma is taken to the hospital after complaining of an inability to see clearly after taking
