How it came to be
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law on 26th July 1990. It was signed
into law by President George H.W. Bush (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, AS
AMENDED with ADA Amendments Act of 2008, n.d.). It is the first comprehensive law on
civil rights in the United States of America that addresses the needs and rights of the citizens
living with disabilities. It was designed to hinder discrimination of the disabled in such fields as
employment, public accommodations, telecommunications, and public services. It aimed at
ensuring that the people living with disabilities in the country are given equal freedoms and
rights with the other citizens.
