You receive a complaint from an inmate who claims that his case manager would not give him stamps and envelopes to mail a complaint against five correctional officers who took his playing cards and domino chips during recreation. The inmate also complained that the notary only comes to the prison 2 days a week and that this interfered with his due process rights of access to the courts.

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Once the inmate has been convicted guilty, he or she is supposed to remain in the custody and engage only in lawful activities. If the cards are for recreational purpose and not unlawful bets then he/she has a right to file a compalint and be listened to. Otherwise, he/she should forfeit the interest in the playing cards and domino chips. If the complaint is sound then the police has to be questioned for violating the inmate's rights.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
