The episode begins by describing why type 2 diabetes is on the rise in the US. For
example, Dr. Richard Jackson who describes the effects of type 2 diabetes in the episode says
that the Americans of today have a shorter lifespan than their parents because the way
America is designed today is unhealthy. Dr. Richard further states that this unhealthy design
prevents people from walking which makes people grow overweight. The overweight then
increases the risk of people becoming diabetic. The episode recommends that the best way to
combat type 2 diabetes is not by medication, but through redesigning our societies.
2. Relate the information from this episode to what you learned in Chapters 1 and 2 of
your textbook,

The first public health discipline that is mentioned in the chapter of the textbook that
is related to this episode is social and behavioral sciences. Overweight is a major risk factor
of diabetes based on this episode. Overweight is caused by the way people live. For example,
people who live a sedentary lifestyle increase their risk of becoming overweight and by
extension diabetes (Berrigan et al., 2014). This means that diabetes is a lifestyle disease that
