Fundamentals of Fire Protection
The Triangle Shirtwaist fire was a deadly tragedy that occurred in New York City on
March 25, 1911. The deadly disaster served as a wakeup call to municipalities and the fire
service as it fostered many significant lessons. It caused the death of one hundred and forty-six
workers who died of smoke inhalation and falling off. Max Blanck and Isac Harris owned the
company and produced blouses commonly known as shirtwaists. The fire is said to have been
caused by the disposal of an extinguished match or cigarette in a dustbin. History records show
that the factory had set unfair rules and mistreated its workers, the exit doors and stairwells were
locked in the quest of preventing theft, upon the incidence of the fire, many workers were not in
a position to escape and jumped off from the high windows (Broyles, 2004). The Triangle
Shirtwaist fire fostered several lessons and led to new laws which demanded factory safety and
set standards that were to be adhered to by every company owner; it also catalyzed the
international ladies garment workers union among many other unions which fought for better
working conditions for factory workers.
The fire proved the importance of new bylaws on the improvement of the safety of
workers. The fact that the company owners had locked the exit doors contributed significantly to

available and few lifts, which helped some employees down (Kent, 1989). The fire escape was
said to have collapsed before the fire and was not repaired, leaving only two stairwells to be used
as escape routes. The locked doors and lack of basic dignity and humanity for employees became
a spectacle, and to date is a sort of profane icon. The introduction of the legislation mentioned
above changed the laws to address the safety of workers. The labor department became
recognizable, and penalties for violations were set under the industrial code.
Additionally, the fire acted as an eye-opener in the aspect of fairness to employees. The
horrific event catalyzed a national cry about working conditions and generated efforts to improve
the conditions. Thanks to the fire and the efforts of the Activists and labor unions like the
International Ladies Garment Workers Union, real changes got underway immediately and in
1911, New York introduced a very comprehensive investigation of the ...
