1:

Viktor Frankl (1905–1995) once said: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." Dr. Viktor Frankl was a Jewish Austrian neurologist and psychologist who survived the concentration camps during World War II. Frankl had his opinion on human freedom. Respond to the following questions:

Explain whether you agree with Frankl's opinion that it is important for a person to have the freedom to choose one's attitude in a given set of circumstances and to choose one's own way.

Describe a personal example in a business setting that supports your explanation. For instance, you might want to discuss how people deal with edicts from on high in a given organization vs. situations where employees have a voice in the decision making process.

To what extent you believe that freedom or the right to choose is important from an ethical perspective and how does this choice impact business success?

In 1950, Dr. Meyer Friedman, a cardiologist, noted that the armrests in his waiting room were worn down, especially on the front edges as if the patients were literally “sitting on the edge of their seats.” From this observation, Dr. Friedman and his colleague gathered data and concluded that patients with heart disease tend to be intensively driven, workaholic-type individuals. They labeled people with these characteristics “Type A” personalities. Individuals that were more laid back and relaxed were labeled as “Type B.”

Take the following personality test to determine if you lean toward a Type A or Type B personality. Discuss and compare your results with your classmates. Do you think there is a strong link between having either of these personality types, stress, and heart disease? Why or why not?

Victor Frankl’s background
Victor Frankl got liberated from the Germany Nazi concentrated camp at the end of world
war II. The German Nazi stripped Frankl everything, including his human dignity. In the end,
Frank lost everything meaningful in his life that is including his wife and family. It was during his
depths of suffering at the hand of the German Nazi that there is a part in him that the Nazi could
not touch or harm. He discovered the last of the human freedoms: the ability to decide what those
painful, inhumane experiences would mean to him.

Explanation of Frankl’s Opinion

Human liberty is having the right of movement and freedom from arbitrary detention by
others. In the German Nazi camp, prisoners were denied this particular right since they were
despised (Frankl, 1963). Nevertheless, every day, every hour, the prisoners were offered an
