Sociology and Religion
Religion describes the values, practices and beliefs identified with spiritual or sacred
concerns. Durkheim, a social theorist, alluded religion as an integrated system of practices
and beliefs to sacrosanct items (Durkheim, 1947). Generally, he is considered as the
paramount sociologist that assessed religion regarding its societal influence. Most
importantly, Durkheim believes that religion is all about the community because it promotes
social cohesion, i.e. it binds individuals together, and it promotes consistency of behaviour
(social control) and provides strength to individuals during the tragedies and transitions of
life (purpose and meaning) (Durkheim, 1947). By way of applying the techniques of usual

tends to justify and support the values and standards of society and to maintain the dominant
groups established within the nation. By understanding social order as predestined by God,
religion masks the fact that individuals make all the societies; it makes the social
arrangements, values and norms appear to be permanent, fixed and immutable-beyond the
control of man.
