Community Anti-Smoking Campaign
Other than delivering care within their clinical practice or professional practice, nurses
often engage in activities and engagements outside the clinical practice. This includes activities
and programs involved at improving the status of the health within the community, especially in
marginalized communities which faces specific health challenges. Today, smoking is ranked as
one of the major causes of adverse health impacts in society, with the practice associated with
various diseases and conditions. This has seen multi-agencies initiatives aimed at reducing the
rates of smoking within the community by engaging directly with the people either struggling
with smoking or those affected by secondary smoking. Led by the HealthyPeople2020 at the
federal level, other programs are initiated at the state and the county level (CDC, 2018).
Combined, these programs and initiatives are intended to address the health risks posed by
continued tobacco use.
One of the scholarly activities that I took part in during my study was participating in a
community anti-smoking campaign initiated by Tobacco Free Florida. In the US alone, tobacco
is associated with approximately 443,000 deaths per year, 28,600 of these occurring in Florida
alone. Globally, this tobacco causes about 8 million deaths as per the World Health
Organization, contributing to both economic and financial losses. The Center for Disease Control
notes that “more than 10 times as many U.S. citizens have died prematurely from cigarette
smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States” (CDC, 2018). According to
Stone, et al. (2017), tobacco remains the leading cause of cancer globally, with lung cancer
becoming a significant concern over the years. However, Thyregod, Løkke, and Bodtger (2018)
note that lung cancer is not the only type of cancer that can occur as a result of smoking, with

other common types of the disease such as nose cancer, throat, and mouth being associated with
smoking.
Other than cancer, tobacco use has been linked to other serious health issues such as
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), stroke and coronary heart disease, ectopic
pregnancy among pregnant women, rheumatoid arthritis, and increases the risks of developing
type 2 diabetes mellitus among others. The risks of developing these diseases and conditions
make reducing tobacco use a significant priority of health departments and community-based
organizations a significant priority. At a state level, the Florida Department of Health has
initiated different programs and activities as part of its preventive services to reduce tobacco use.
Launched in 2007, the Tobacco Free Florida (TFF) which administered through the Florida
Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida engages in comprehensive tobacco
education and use prevention program. The program engages in activities which promote
smoking cessation across the state.
During the program, one of the criti...
