Opioid Epidemic
The increased prescription of opioid medications in the late 1990s resulted in the
widespread misuse of both prescribed and non-prescribed opioids. The devastating consequences
of opioid epidemic include overdoses and rising incidence of newborns experiencing withdrawal
syndrome following opioid misuse during pregnancy. One of the key solutions that can be used
in solving the opioid epidemic is improving access to treatment and recovery services. In 2015,
the federal agencies and departments that contract, provide, reimburse or facilitate access to
healthcare benefits were encouraged to identify the potential issues associated with the Medication
Assisted Treatment (MAT) for the opioid misuse and develop action plans (NIDA, 2018).
Substance abuse treatment has been shown to be an effective measurement in helping an addict
achieve recovery. Improve the access to treatments will help the opioid abusers develop skills that
can be used to reduce or eliminate substance abuse (NIDA, 2018). In addition, this solution helps
in neutralizing the effects of opioid addiction on the individual’s behavior, rate of productivity and
mental health. In addition to effective access to treatment, there is a need to develop a better
structure in ensuring full recovery of the patient. Upon completion of the treatment, proper
recovery services should be set up to ensure that the patient does not encounter a relapse. For
example, a recovery program can be developed where the progress of the patient can be tracked
after treatment. The improvement of treatment access and recovery services will enhance the
foundation of helping struggling opioid abusers to safe and efficient treatment and long-term
recovery.
