Introduction

Wang Tao's reformist views were greatly influenced by his travel to Shanghai in 1848
and further developed when he traveled to Britain in 1867 (Wo & Cohen, 2007). During these
periods, he got to observe Western society firsthand and personally associate with Europeans.
This enabled him to reflect on Chinese culture in light of Western culture. Tao challenged the
existence of the strange and fantastic lands spoken of in Chinese literary tradition, arguing that
Westerners have found no empirical evidence of the existence of those lands. He also argued
that the fantastic creatures such as dragons and unicorns that the Chinese believed in sounded
absurd because Westerners utterly denied the existence of such things.
