Remember, it takes 30 days to develop a good habit. Therefore, a goal that is not written is a goal that is NOT achieved.

Part 3

"Do Teachers Need Better Training?" Please respond to the following:

Based on your professional experiences, identify two (2) challenges confronting diversity and education, and explain how they are the same as or different from the main challenges of the last century. Provide a rationale for your response. Respond to at least one other student.

Part 6

Review the case study titled "Terms of Endearment", where teacher Virginia Lawson is confronted with issues of racially insensitive name-calling in her classroom and struggles with handling the situation appropriately.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

Take a position on whether or not Anthony's explanation of why he was using the n-word made his actions less of a problem. Take a position on whether or not there are any circumstances in which it would be appropriate for someone to use the n-word or any variation of it in a classroom or school, and explain those circumstances. Provide a rationale for your position.

Suggest at least one (1) alternate way that Ms. Lawson might have decreased tension in the class following the incident instead of chastising Keisha and ordering her to sit down. Analyze how the way you suggested would have addressed Keisha's comments, and the feelings underneath them, more effectively.

Examine at least one (1) other way that Ms. Lawson might have checked in with Reggie following the incident instead of calling attention to him in front of the whole class and causing him embarrassment. Analyze whether the way you chose would have more effectively allowed Reggie to express his true feelings.

Determine how you would handle the necessary task, after this incident, of addressing the use of the n-word with the class. Provide a list of steps that you would take, as well as a rationale for your response.

This question is simply intended to see if you are humble and teachable and a team player.

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

Terms of Endearment
Introduction

A term of endearment is a word or a phrase that is used to express affection towards a
person or an item. The word or phrase used in this context has its own connotation and which is
highly dependent on the situation the person or individual is in. Tone of voice, social context,
and body language may vary depending on the situation. In the case of the new mathematics
teacher at Greenstown High School, Ms. Virginia Lawson finds it difficult to handle a situation
she stated in a racially insensitive name-calling occasion in the classroom (Gorski, & Pothini,
2013).
In this case study, one of her students called Anthony used the n-word to address an
African-American classmate named Reggie. The incident happened in the presence of a Latino
student named Adolfo. It was not a big issue to the student themselves as they were all laughing
about it. It was not however a small issue to the teacher after she heard it. Ms. Lawson
confronted Anthony about the issue and he was quick to defend himself citing that he used the
world as a term of endearment (Bateman, 2012). Keisha was one of the African-American ladies
in the classroom who was not happy with how Anthony was trying to get away with the issue
because she was of the opinion that the n-word was racist. The issue brought about mixed
reactions from the people present when the n-word was uttered (Yan, Evans, & Harvey, 2011).
A Position on Whether or not Anthony’s explanation of why he was using the n-word made
this less of a Problem
The explanation that Anthony gave as to the reason why he used the n-word made the
situation to worsen.

a. The utterances that Anthony made provoked the reaction of other African-American
students in the class like Keisha and who ended up expressing their bitter emotions
towards him. For example, Keisha told Anthony that he was lucky that he was not getting
a beat down because of uttering those words.
b. The interruption that Keisha made regarding the issue was rude and harsh which cause
Ms. Lawson to respond in a harsh manner that embarrassed her in front of the entire
class.
c. Anthony’s words created a tense environment in the classroom and especially among
those who were laughing and joyful but all over a sudden felt uncomfortable and
pressured.
d. Ms. Lawson did not buy the explanation given by Anthony and this led her more probing
on the issue. It led her to become harder on Anthony and this affected how the situation
was handled appropriately.
The n-word has continued to be used in different contexts without causing any alarm or
sentiments of racism. However, in a classroom of school context, the n-word can be used for
example in the reaction of an affected party and in this case whether the words were used on
them or not. Secondly, it can be used in a racially diverse society where there is a mixture of
different races and like the African-Americans can used it amongst themselves and feel no
offence in doing that (Arendale, 2005). In a society where the n-word is accepted by everyone, it
can be deemed appropriate to use it.

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

4

Rationale for my Position
Taking a position on this, I believe that the society is changing a lot and the n-word is losing
meaning every day. It is becoming a common word that is not deemed to be racist as it used to be
several years ago.
Alternate way that Ms. Lawson might have decreased tension in the class following the
incident instead of chastising Keisha and ordering her to sit down
Ms. Lawson had an option of sidelining Keisha and other students that were involved in
the issue and this could have eased the tension that had built up in the class. Taking issue lightly
and removing it from the floor of the house could have created a chance to deal with the problem
calmly and this could have saved Keisha the embarrassment and relived Reggie of the
uncomforta...
