Acquisition Procedures for Mobile Devices
Introduction
The mobile acquisition is part of digital forensics, which involves the preservation and
analysis of digital data, which can then be used in court cases, crime detection, or prevention.
The mobile acquisition is one of the categories of digital evidence others being computer
forensics, network forensics, and database forensics. Acquisition, therefore, involves the cloning
or copying of digital data evidence from mobile devices through a process known as imaging
(Larson, 2014). There are various techniques of data acquisition, which include manual
acquisition and physical acquisition. The manual acquisition deals with the visual display of the
data that is contained in the mobile device while the physical acquisition is concerned with bit by
bit copying of the entire physical storage. Mobile forensics involves various steps, and this paper
will analyze concerns involved in mobile acquisition and the procedures of mobile forensics.
Concerns in Mobile Acquisition
Due to the advances in technology, personal computers, and mobile devices have posed a
significant challenge due to their increased use in criminal activities. Computer forensics is
concerned with acquiring digital artifacts, including electronic documents, storage mediums, and
computer systems (INFOSEC, 2019). However, the mobile acquisition has raised significant
concerns, which include:
i) Mobile operating system
The mobile technology is categorized by different types of operating systems and their
kinds, which have quite different variants from each other. This difference is the main challenge
that forensic examiners have to undergo.
ii) Security features
