Description

For this assignment, identify a social issue you are personally interested in learning more about, advocating for the cause, or are against it, and identify fallacious reasoning.

Specialists in communication are often hired to clean up problems created by unthoughtful messaging. While advocates dedicate significant amounts of time and energy promoting causes, they often struggle to clearly identify their logical positions. To further the problem, in light of clear arguments advocates commonly utilize informal fallacies to persuade their target audiences. These weaknesses tend to create easily avoidable communications crises. The first step is to identify the communicative problems.

In 800 words:

  1. Research an advocate (individual or organization) that promotes a relevant social issue. Identify the organization and explain the relevancy of the social issue.
  2. Show the steps you took to translate the position/argument you researched into a clear logical form by writing out the logical premises and conclusions from the material presented by the advocate.
  3. Identify a minimum of five informal fallacies that are made by the advocate. Explain the fallacies themselves and how each functions.

At least two academic peer-reviewed sources are required for this paper.

Social Issues Research In this course you will be asked to do independent research on a topic that is of interest to you and keep that topic for the semester. As researcher, it is often difficult to know where to begin any undertaking, so our library has put together some starting points on various prominent social issues of our day. This list is not exhaustive and to be successful you will need to add your own research. For research in the course each assignment requires academic peer-reviewed material. This includes academic journals or published academic level books. Ask your professor about sources if you have questions. For example, the Salem Press Encyclopedia that is linked in this document is not a peer-reviewed journal, but is a good academic source for beginning research. Finally, do not limit your research to academic journals. Databases: Opposing Viewpoints is a great database to use when looking for information about large current issues. It contains broad topic overviews, viewpoints on both sides of the issue, news articles, journal articles, and videos. It includes over 14,000 viewpoint essays, 5,000 topic overviews, 300 primary source documents, 300 biographies of social activists and reformers, 775 court case overviews, 5 million journal articles, 6,000 statistical tables, charts, graphs and over 70,000 images as well as thousands of podcasts: https://lopes.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/canyonuniv?db=OVRC Issues and Controversies is another database that contains content similar to Opposing Viewpoints: https://lopes.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://online.infobaselearning.com/Direct.aspx?aid=96349& pid=WE57 Research Starters are detailed overviews of topics. Great for finding general information on large issues. To find them, from the library homepage, click "Find Journal Articles." In the LopeSearch Box at the top of the page, type the concept you want to look up (For example: social media). Do not check peer reviewed or choose a subject, just hit the Search button. Once you have signed in, you will be on the search results page. If there is a Research Starter for the concept, it will be the first result. It will be labeled "Research Starter" and will have an image next to it. Running head: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

A social problem is a condition that negatively affects the lives of people living in a
society. The researched topic is religious freedom. It is one aspect of human rights but it has
been neglected in society and it is researched in finding the truth. According to the Human
Rights Committee of the UN, religious freedom protects the beliefs of the theistic, non-theistic

beliefs without been discriminated. According to Pope John Paul III, religious freedom should be
an on-going concern being given priority in the society since there is always an emerging of new
forms of religious fundamentalism. These new forms deny religious rights to some of the groups
leading to disagreements and discrimination (McConnell & Posner, 2014).
