Abstract

The change in our lifestyles has increased life expectancy, which has, in turn, increased
the occurrences of diseases in the elderly. One of these major diseases is osteoporosis a disease
which is characterized by the bone weakness that leads to fractures due to the decreased strength
of the bones in the body. It mainly affects the vertebrae, hips, and the bones of the forearm.
Another main notation is that it manifests itself in the elderly. Once one has osteoporosis, their
bones become fragile and porous, which in turn leads to fractures. In most cases, it is only
discovered after the first fracture. During our lifetime, old bones are removed and replaced by
the formation of new bones which happens mainly during our teen years up to the late twenties.
Notably, new bones formed are more than the old bones removed, which makes the bones larger
and denser.
Therefore, osteoporosis occurs when the formation of new bones is too slow, or bone loss
is too fast. Women experience fast bone loss after menopause and if it is too much and new bone
formation is too slow than they develop osteoporosis. Sometimes it may also affect the older
adults. Additionally, it is more prevalent in white and Asian people. Another category more
susceptible to the disease is thin small women. In most cases, it only happens if one failed to
reach optimal bone mass during the bone-building period. Factors like gender; ethnicity cannot
be changed about the disease (Dempster, 2011). However, factors like lifestyle; disorders like
anorexia nervosa can be changed. An inactive lifestyle weakens the bones. All these are risk
factors for osteoporosis.

History of Osteoporosis

In the 18th century, John Hunter, a surgeon discovered that when old bones were
destroyed, a new bone was formed and he named the process remodeling. Later on in the 1830s,
a pathologist Jean Lobstein discovered the state of porous bones which he called osteoporosis. In
1930, it was discovered that post-menopause was what made women more susceptible to
osteoporosis, and over the year, more advancements took place on the disease (Lorentzon, 2015).
Observably, the disease has been an issue in the world since the early years. The first
organization that was formed in a bid to fight the disease was in 1987, where the European
Foundation for Osteoporosis was formed, and later in 1995, the International Federation of
Societal on Skeletal Diseases was formed. However, when they discovered the severity of the
disease, the...
