Intergovernmental relations in the United States, which refers to the relationship between the
federal and local governments, can be described as competitive, collusive, coercive, conflictual,
and cooperative at the same time. In matters to do with public administration and the day-to-day
operations of the government, intergovernmental relations can be defined as cooperative, but when
it comes to sensitive political decision making concerning the election of executive government
officials, intergovernmental relations often get very coercive, with the federal government having
most of the power. State governments, on the other hand, have lately been exerting more power
and mandate on issues regarding local state laws. This paper will focus on one of the main issues
