WEEKLY DISCUSSION PROMPT: Part2( chapter4-6) Hello everyone! This week, we are going to discuss our reading of Part 2 of This Changes Everything, which is called "Magical Thinking." For your original post, please write a complete paragraph in which you explain what you think Klein means when she uses the concept of "Magical Thinking" in connection to the climate crisis. Use one quote from somewhere in Part 2 in your original post. FOLLOW ALL THE POSTED GUIDELINES for this assignment in order to receive up to 20 points. Guidelines are posted in week 1's module. MLA REQUIRMENT: Hello everyone, I graded Triple-Entry Journals #1, and the class average grade was 20. That is an acceptable start, but I would like everyone to work harder and improve their grades. Please note that you should be familiar with and use MLA format throughout the assignment. You must also follow all of the posted guidelines to complete the assignment. For a review of MLA format, go to the link in our top module, which will guide you through the OWL Purdue website materials on MLA format. Also, here is a sample of a student's work that is excellent, A-quality work: 1. DIRECT QUOTE FROM TEXT, USING MLA FORMAT (limit quote to no more than four sentences) According to This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, “Slavery wasn’t a crisis for British and American elites until abolitionism turned it into one. Racial discrimination wasn’t a crisis until the civil rights movement turned it into one. Sex discrimination wasn’t a crisis until feminism turned it into one. Apartheid wasn’t a crisis until the anti-apartheid movement turned it into one” (6). 2. PARAPHRASE THE QUOTE USING YOUR OWN WORDS (limit paraphrasing to no more than four sentences) According to This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, we need to form union to solve the problem of climate change. Every problem is spotted by the transformation or movement which caused by an organization. The way how we can solve this crisis is based on the establishment of an institution (6). 3. RESPOND TO THE QUOTE IN A CRITICAL WAY: WHAT IS THE CONEXT OF THIS QUOTE IN THE BOOK? HOW DOES IT FIT WITH THE BOOK CHAPTER'S LARGER ARGUMENT? WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS QUOTE? DO YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE, AND WHY? (limit your response here no more than six sentences; you do not need to respond to each of these questions) This sentence mainly refers to the idea that establishment of an institution is the basic and essential way to solve the problem. There were so many problems had been solved by the movement of many institutions. In this case, in terms of the topic of climate change, the first step is people need to collaborate together to face this critical problem by build an institution. If no one engage in this transformation, there will not be any outcome can be achieved. At this urgent moment, we need to use the same method to deal with the environmental problems. We can learn from the movement before to make it more convincing and powerful. WEEKLY DISCUSSION EXAMPLE: Klein, when discussing bad timing, highlights the negative changes brought about by a climate crisis and the reluctance of global leaders and organizations to embrace change in the system. The leaders have failed to come up with strict policies and regulations that safeguard the environment. This makes the bad timing of solving the crisis when it occurs since minimal help is offered to the affected persons. According to This Changes Everything by Klein, advocates for a change in the system and not merely climate change (109). In her discussion on bad timing, she tries to explain how human beings have not been able to learn about climate changes and hence timing on how to solve any natural calamity when it occurs has not been done in good time. This bad timing has, in return, resulted in big loses and loss of lives and properties. According to This Changes Everything by Klein, the climate crisis dates to the post-enlightenment era in western culture, which was characterized by myths about human being’s ability to dominate (113). Because of this rationale, humans dominated and controlled a natural world that was limitless and controllable. These actions were the beginning of a climate crisis that would remain hundreds of years afterward. In the years preceding the industrial revolution, many innovations were made to facilitate manufacturing and production. The Gases emitted such as carbon dioxide were harmful to the climate, and it took too long to have the issue solved. This has also resulted in poor climatic patterns that are unpredictable. According to This Changes Everything by Klein, “the system that we have vilifies collective action hence does not offer a solution to the climate crisis, which requires collective action to avoid the deepening of the crisis"(147). The author, in her explanation of bad timing, also highlights the transfer of harmful climate practices from overseas to developing nations. Although industries claim to fight against dangerous climate practices, they are just transferring their activities to developing countries where there are flexible climate laws and poor implementation of environmental regulations. This is because they don't care about the climate; all they care about is their businesses. This, in return, has affected the climate pattern and hence, major cases of natural calamity happening. By so doing the climate crisis intensifies and affects parts of the earth that were somewhat less entangled in the mess. Throughout her description of bad timing, Klein directly relates economic activities to the climate crisis with capitalism as the key contributing factor for the creation and deepening of the crisis. !!!I NEED YOU REPLY TWO STUDENS’ POST, I WILL GIVE YOU THEIR ANSWER WHEN I GET THAT!!!! To receive full credit -- 20 points -- for the assignment, you must follow these guidelines. You must post one original post of your own, responding to the prompt I post for the weekly discussion. Then you must respond to two other student posts. To receive full credit, you must post three times (your original plus two replies). 1. Each post MUST BE a complete paragraph of 5 or more sentences. This includes your own original posts and you individual responses to other student posts. 2. Each post must be detailed. It is not enough to simply write, "I agree with you" or "I like your idea." You must say WHY you agree or like someone's ideas. 3. Write in complete, standard English sentences. Do not "text." Poorly written posts will not be considered for a grade. 4. If you disagree with someone's post, politely do so. Explain why you disagree with facts and details. 5. If you agree with someone, build on the ideas. 6. You can reply to someone who had replied to your original post; this will count as another of your required postings for the assignment. 7. Be kind, respectful, and curious toward other students. 8. The instructor reserves the right to delete any post that is offensive, intolerant, or not sufficiently academic for a college-level course. The forums are PUBLIC and the instructor reads every single post made. SUBSCRIPTIONS are optional. If you do not want to receive a copy of every post made, you must opt out of the forum subscription individually. REPLY EXAMPLE: Hi Ma: I agree with your opinion. The most stupid thing to do is to bring economic benefits at the expense of the environment. I have an example of personal experience, I really want to share it with you. I grew up in Shijiazhuang, China. Shijiazhuang is a famous industrial city in China. Chimneys with heavy smoke can be seen everywhere. Citizens must wear thick masks to breathe and survive in the city. Today, as humans value the development of the environment, the cost of managing the environment far exceeds human expectations. There are big problems with such an economic system. The Chinese have also used the example of Chinese cities to prove this point. Hi Huang, I agree with your opinion. Human exploitation of oil and natural resources has caused much irreversible damage to nature. These damages have brought about a short-term improvement in the quality of human life, but they have brought permanent damage to nature. I have a lot to say about the "4°C warmer world" that you mentioned. An increase in the temperature of the earth means an increase in sea level and the disappearance of coastal countries. An increase in the temperature of the earth means that tropical continents such as Africa are no longer suitable for human habitation; a warm environment will help the growth of bacteria. Four changes threaten the safety of every life on earth, and humans must find ways to save themselves.

Magical Thinking and Climate Crisis
Naomi Klein asserted in her book, This Changes Everything, that climate change crisis that is
threatening the continued existence of the human races would require solutions that result from
the exception thought processes of the corporations, the government, and the environmental
activists. She considered that these ideas as magical thinking because they involve innovative
technical solutions such as geoengineering, and dimming of the rays from the sun with sulfatespraying helium balloons. While these solutions might appear unrealistic to so many people, my
interpretation of magical thinking is different according to my understanding of the first three
chapters of the second section of the book. First, I consider her recommendation to the
government to provide incenti...
