Week 5 What is at Stakes? Discussions Board: upload your final research question and one paragraph on why it is important to you D2L: Upload weekly reflection Keep researching and reading articles for the research paper How do you choose a research question? • Sometimes you combine a series of questions to come up with a research question. Sometimes you do some initial research and think about what it is that you are really interested in. Let’s look at an example on the next slide. Horror films Asian representation 1. How are Asian characters represented in horror films? Narrow the scope to zombie films (a subgenre or horror) + limit to Hollywood films 2. How are Asian characters represented in Hollywood zombie films? This is an example of one of my personal research questions. My topic was “Asian representation in horror films” and the research question solidified after some initial research on zombies and racial representation. Why am I interested in this question? Initial research] Hollywood zombie films historically have a racial component – it started out as films set in Haiti or other colonialized countries (1932), emphasizing the threat of non-white zombies multiplying. It also speaks to anti-miscegenation laws in America starting from Romero’s movies (1968). 3. Final research question: Based on the historical anti-miscegenation laws and racism in Hollywood zombie films, how has the representation of Asian characters changed from 1970s to now? This branch is research on racial representation on horror films (branching off of or based on the large branch of research on horror films. This large branch is research on horror film This smaller branch is the research on Asian representation in horror films What to look for during your initial research (to help you finalize your inquiry) • Historical information • What are some historical background pertaining to your topic? • What other aspects can you add to your inquiry after reading up on the basic history of your topic? • Make sure that your question is not easily answered by this simple research on historical background • Consider the multiple perspectives • What disciplines would have a say in your topic/inquiry? Law? Medicine? Psychology? Neurology? Sociology? Anthropology? • What groups might have a say in your topic/inquiry? Feminists? Leftists? Capitalists? Democrats? Republicans? Cultural-historians? Politicians? Teachers? • Which perspectives are you interested in? Homework: What’s at Stake (AKA Why is this important for you?) • As you are developing your inquiries that will drive the research paper, it is important to think about the purpose and what’s at stake. The two go hand-inhand because “why you’re writing this paper” is related to “why this inquiry is important.” • For homework, come up with one research question that is specific enough for English 102. You may have to combine several questions from your “Topics and Questions” homework, or you might have to come up with an entirely new question. • Then write 1 paragraph on why this inquiry is important enough for you to research and write on. I’m looking for more than a simple statement such as “because this is interesting to me and I’ve been interested since I was very young.” Elaborate – you are probably interested in so many different things. Why this topic? How about your readers? Why should people care about your inquiry? Who are your audiences? • Upload this on D2L Discussions board. Example: “What’s at Stake” One idea I have for my questions is something along the lines of “How can untreated sleep disorders and bad sleeping habits effect a college student’s academic performance and health?” I think this will be a productive question, for one it is a topic that am interested in and I believe also my audience would be to. This topic could potentially affect a lot of students and it would be beneficial to know if our sleeping habits are becoming detrimental to our health, academic performance and future. I think this topic is easily overlooked because not getting enough sleep seems to be a common acceptable practice in college and in our society and if the outcomes prove to be more negative, it is something we should all be educated on. Homework Assignment – Weekly Reflections 2 Inquiry and Research Reflection 2: Inquiry and Research (upload on D2L) • We have talked about what makes a good inquiry in class. What makes an inquiry good for our English 102 class? What is your inquiry? How did you end up with this inquiry? Did you eliminate other questions? Did you combine questions? Did you add a part to your inquiry as a result of some initial research? What are some key words or phrases you searched for? • You do NOT have to answer all the questions posed above. I’m looking for at least 1 paragraph (5-6 sentences). Upload Reflective Assignment 3 on D2L by 11:59 PM on Saturday (7/27). Research • Lastly, keep researching. Find some articles and make sure to save them as PDF files for easy access later on. Next week’s assignment will be a combination of summaries and the connection between the article and your research question. Do not leave research to the last minute. Part of homework this week is to keep researching. 124-6/29 Weekly assignment: upload (1) an introduction on the discussion board and (2) a paragraph on the Burkean Metaphor Week 2 Nick Walker's "Throwing Away the Master's Tools" 7/1-7/6 Weekly assignment: upload (1) "what makes a good summary" on the discussion board and (2) summarize Nick Walker's article in less than 500 words Week 3 Audre Lorde's "Master's Tools will Never Dismantle the Master's House" 7/8-7/13 Weekly assignment: upload (1) summary of Lorde on the discussion board, (2) complete the worksheet connecting Walker and Lorde, and (3) complete the weekly reflection Week 4 Topics and Questions + Initial Research 7/15-7/20 Weekly assignment: upload (1) “what makes a good inquiry on the discussion board, and (2) 9 inquiries Week 5 Choosing a question and Explaining its Stakes 7/22-7/27 Weekly assignment: upload (1) the final question that you will be working with on the discussion board along with why this question is important, (2) complete the weekly reflection, and (3) keep on researching and reading articles for the research paper Week 6 6-Source Bibliography 7/29-8/3 Weekly assignment: upload your 6-source bibliography Week 7 First Draft 8/5-8/10 Weekly assignment: (1) upload the first draft of your research paper and (2) weekly reflections Week 8 Final Draft 07 1.1...
