Introduction

Dementia is a general term for describing symptoms that affect the memory, thinking,
and social abilities to the extent that the ordinary daily life of a person is affected. Dementia is
not a specific disease, but several diseases cause dementia. Most of the time, Alzheimer's disease
causes dementia in older people. However, having memory loses does not imply that a person
has dementia. Other factors can cause memory loss, and therefore, there have to be other
symptoms for a person to be diagnosed with dementia. Vascular dementia is another major cause
of dementia. This is a disease which occurs after a person suffers from a stroke. There are also
other conditions which cause symptoms of dementia, but they are reversible. They include
thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies. According to Bondi, Edmonds & Salmon (2017), the
symptoms of dementia memory loss, difficulties finding the right words, changes in mood,
apathy, difficulties in completing tasks, confusion, repetitiveness, and changes in mood among
others. This paper is about dementia, its effects on work and family, and the ethical concerns that
arise when caring for people who have dementia.
