GROUP COUNSELLING FOR ESL STUDENTS
Introduction
Group counseling has proven to be one of the most effective techniques for
addressing issues, especially as experienced by students. These issues include but are not
limited to grief, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and other forms of discomfort in social
situations. Group counseling is a type of therapy whereby people with similar problems meet
and interact with a professional counselor. It provides a safe haven where the people can
socialize, share their experiences, and improve their social skills without the fear of being
incriminated since they all face the same issues. Group counseling enhances self-awareness,
intrapersonal, and interpersonal skills increased self-esteem and provide a constructive way
of addressing problems. Due to the differences in the members of the group, this technique
may be challenging for the therapist. It may also be intimidating to the people involved.

dumb before the rest of their classmates. This may lead to anxiety disorders and depression if
not addressed. In this case, I will be conducting a group counseling session for ten ESL
students; five of whom are family-sponsored immigrants from India, two from Cuba, and
three students on an exchange program with Africa.
The rationale for the program
According to Seddon (2015), the primary rationale for school counselors to strive
towards addressing the needs of ESL students is the influence they have on these students as
revealed by various studies. By improving communicat...
