Topic For this final essay, we will be writing an argument essay, with the same essay structure as Essay 3. We will also focus on a topic similar to the topic of Essay 3: animal research. In your essay, you will need to respond to the question in your thesis: “Is it ethical for humans to conduct scientific experimentation using animal subjects?” This "research” could refer to medical research, cosmetics research, psychological research, or any other kind of research using animals. You can choose to focus on one or more) particular kind(s) of research if you like, or simply research in general. When responding to this question, you can consider some of the same ideas you used when discussing zoos in Essay 3, like animal rights and autonomy, animals' experience of suffering, and humans' responsibility to take care of animals. You might also consider some new issues: whether animal wellbeing is as important as human wellbeing, and whether it is acceptable to allow animal suffering to avoid human suffering. In the essay, everyone must use five (5) sources in total: “Animal Experimentation” by Paul Flecknell (already provided on the Student Portal) 4 additional sources that you will locate through your own research 2. Is it ethical for humans to conduct scientific experimentation using animal subjects?
Scientific experimentation using animal subjects has been an area of controversy in the
recent years. Animal subjects are used for experimentation through exposing them to human
conditions such as a disease under study. Animal experimentation therefore allows researchers to
reach extreme levels of experimentation which cannot be tried in human patients since they can
cause great harm or even death to the patient (Ulrich 199). As a result, animal experimentation
allows scientists to gain more knowledge on the evolution and progression of fatal diseases
throughout different processes such as diagnosis as well as treatment. Despite the underlying
argument that experimentation of animals is better than using human subjects, animal
experimentation cannot be justified by any ethical grounds (Kerrigan). Conducting scientific
experimentation by the use of animal subjects is unethical because it causes animal suffering,
there are other better ways which can be used to achieve same results without being a threat to
life and most of the experiments conducted in animals tend to fail in humans.
Experimentation of animal subjects involve subjection of the animal specimens to
suffering characterized by fear, pain or even death in some cases. Protecting life is one of the
most basic role of human beings. Violation of this basic principle through being a threat to the
life of an animal specimen makes the experimentation unethical. Animals are exposed
unconfirmed treatments to diseases which are under research (Tatchell). As a result, the lives of

these animal specimens are put at risk since they could die from the disease which is being
