METHODOLOGY
Overview of the Chapter.

The literature review section showed that information on social media use among women
in Kuwait is unavailable or largely inadequate. In particular, researchers have failed to explore
how privacy concerns, patriarchy, and societal expectations influence online behavior among
Kuwaiti women. In the methodology section, the researcher attempted to bridge this gap by
researching how privacy concerns, patriarchy, and societal expectations impacts online behavior
among Kuwaiti women. The methodology section provided a step by step analysis of the
approach used to collect, analyze, interpret, and present the data. In this section, the researcher
restated the research questions, identified the research design, as well as the data collection and
analysis techniques that were employed. Further, the section provided the rationale for the choice
of study design, data collection methods including site selection and sampling, and the data
analysis and interpretation. Since the key aim of the study was to explore how privacy concerns,
societal expectations, and patriarchy influences social media use among females in Kuwait, the
section concentrated on the major social networking sites which are Snapchat, Twitter and
Instagram.
Research questions.
➢ In what ways do patriarchy and societal expectations impact social media use among
women in Kuwaiti?
➢ How do religion and cultural factors influence social media use among women in
Kuwait?

METHODOLOGY

The research design refers to the overall methods which a researcher uses to research, and
further understand the problem under analysis (Taylor et al., 2015). Study design involves the
data collection methods, data analysis, and how the data will be interpreted so that meaning can
be drawn from the data. In this study, the researcher conducted qualitative research to understand
social media use among Kuwait women, and to identify how this use is impacted by social
norms, patriarchy, and privacy concerns. According to Taylor et al., (2015), a qualitative
research is exploratory in nature since it seeks to understand people’s motivation, opinions, and
reasons behind a certain behavior or course of action. Taylor et al., (2015), further argues that
qualitative researchers are concerned with understanding the subjects from their own frame of
reference so that they can better understand how the subjects see certain things. Through a
qualitative research, a researcher can understand how participants view certain things, and the
meaning they attach to several things in their lives.
Qualitative research was developed for social sciences, but have since been employed in
other fields of life such as humanities (Taylor et al., 2015). The choice of qualitative research
was influenced by the fact that the study was exploratory in nature, and the researcher wanted to
understand opinions, and motivations of Kuwaiti women. In particular, the researcher wanted to
understand their social media use habits and how these women interact with other users online.
The researcher used a face to face interviews which have been found to be effective when
studying social media use in Arabic countries (Stranger et al., 2017; Shihab, 2017). Also, face to
face interview was preferred since the method is efficient and could allow the researcher to get
key details, which cannot be obtained through other methods such as online questionnaires, or
phone interviews.
Setting

METHODOLOGY
The research was carried out in Kuwait City, which is the headquarters and the largest
city in Kuwait by size. The choice of this city was influenced by several factors among them:

Accessibility, relevance to the study, and the researcher’s familiarity with the study environment.
According to Grove, & Gray, (2018), researchers should select a research setting depending on
its accessibility, significance to the study, and the number, and type of participants present (p.
254). Kuwait City is served by an elaborate transport system, comprising of both road and air
transport. This makes it easily accessible by the researcher at any time. Further, the researcher
grew up in Kuwait and knew most places in Kuwait City. For this reason, they never encountered
any serious challenge moving from one point to another. Also, they understood applicable rules,
regulations, as well as the culture within this country.
Another factor that influenced the choice of the city is its significance to the study. The
key aim ...
