12:34 LTE POL111essaySummer2019 PDF - 20 KB POL 111- Final Assignment Due 4 August, 2019 Instructions: Please choose one question from the set below and write an essay response. You may use your textbook and notes while composing your answer. You may not work with others. Your essay should be at least 4 pages in length. (Please use a Normal 12pt font and double spacing). Email the essay to me as an attachment. Please send it in a format I can open like MS Word (.doc or .docx) rich text format (.rtf), plain text (.txt), open office (.odt), or as a PDF. Apple pages is also ok. Please note the day this essay is due. Our class ends on December 14. I must report your final grade shortly after this! So, please do not send me late essays. (Of course, essays can always be submitted early). Questions, Choose One: 1. We discussed in class some of the positive and negative attributes of federalism. Do you think that federalism was the best choice for the United States? Explain why or why not. 2. We began this course by talking about the Constitution of the United States. What do you think are the greatest strengths of the document? Do you think that it also has some major weaknesses? 3. In our chapters on the major institutions of government, we talked about why so much power has shifted to the Presidency. Do you think this is a negative trend? Do you think it is a necessary trend? Do the other two branches of government have enough power to keep the modern Presidency in check? Further Advice: Students often ask me a question along the lines of, “so this is like, uhm, uh, an opinion paper.” Yes, it is. However, I grade your papers by looking at how well you argue the position you take, not what that position is. For example, I am interested to see what you think are the strengths and weaknesses of the Constitution (#2). But a good essay answer will not merely say, “in my opinion....". Instead, the author needs to cite information and examples from the class that support this opinion. So, the best essay answers to these questions cite specific examples from the material we studied as support for whatever opinion you advance. 2

considering the demographics and geography, federalism is the best form of governance for the
United States. During the early days of the United States, the country experienced a lot of
constitutional generation demands especially to ensure that different communities continue to
exercise their skills in different fields including farming and manufacturing as well as trade.
Because of the diversity in the communities of the United States, federalism played a critical role
towards protection against tyranny and other negative aspects of governance as experienced
under British colonialism. This paper defends federalism as the best form of governance for the
