Introduction
While proper nutrition is necessary for every person, it is particularly significant in
people suffering from cystic fibrosis. The disease is an inherited disorder that results in severe
damages to the digestive organs as well as the lungs. Children from parents with the gene
mutation for cystic fibrosis have a 25% chance of inheriting the disease (Stoltz, Meyerholz &
Welsh, 2015). The disease results in the thickening of mucus from the cells that produce bodily
fluids, thereby resulting in the blockage of air passages. People living with cystic fibrosis have
nutritional difficulties arising from poor absorption of fat and nutrient intake in the body. It is,
therefore, necessary to consider the dietary intake of patients suffering from the disease. Also,
the fact that the disease cannot be cured means that patients must rely on a proper diet for their
survival. This paper explores the challenges of cystic fibrosis and makes recommendations on
the proper nutrition for the patients.
Pathophysiology
Despite the severity of the ailment, its manifestation is changeable with different patients
showing different symptoms. In other cases, the disease is asymptotic in patients and may only
