Introduction
The health sector is faced with numerous challenges that threaten the quality of care of
patient safety. A nurse’s primary responsibility is to meet the needs of their patients such as
physical, emotional, and education needs. However, this is not always the case as several factors
hinder it. Nursing staffing ratios are among the factors that threaten the performance of nurses
and the wellbeing of their patients (Lee et al. 2017). Nursing staffing ratios directly affect the
quality of care offered to the patient and the promotion of patient safety.
Description of Nursing Staffing Ratios
Nurse staffing ratios refer to the number of nurses against patients. Different medical
departments have various requirements for the number of nurses needed per patient. For
example, the maternity ward requires a minimum of one nurse for every two patients. According
to Lee et al. (2017) the current number of patients available for every patient is insufficient.
Many nurses are recruited by the private medical sector, which is growing at a fast pace leaving
inadequate staffing in the public sector. Also, the number of nurses graduating from school is
insufficient to meet the demand of the patients that require their help (Lee et al. 2017). Nursing
staffing ratios affect service delivery and the recovery process of patients in the hospital.
