After the Civil War, the United States became a much more industrialized society. Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization improved American life in many ways. However, industrialization also created problems for American society. Consider events that took place after the Civil War and discuss ways that industrialization affected the U.S. between 1865 and 1920.

Part 1:

  1. Write a thesis statement that is one to two (1-2) sentences long in which you:

The body of the essay organizes the material you gather and present in support of your main idea. Keep in mind that a thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. (Note: Please consult the Purdue OWL Website with tips on how to construct a proper thesis; the website can be found at:https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/

The industrial revolution oversaw the developments in the transport system that improved connectivity and communication in the US. Productivity in all sectors increased and resulted in increased trade. Industrialization improved the living conditions of the middle class from improved earnings. The majority of people who initially worked in the agricultural sector shifted to the new industrial positions. The wealthy people took control of the politics of the nation. Urbanization that resulted from the industrial revolution led to a modernized American society which led to the emergence of the US as a superpower. Major aspects of industrialization Industrialization affected many aspects of human life including the organization of the society, the economy and political aspects of the Americans. Society Since the major businesses developed in urban centers people migrated to the cities. The cities grew rapidly. There emerged differences between the rich and the poor that resulted in widespread discontent. New reform movements were formed due to the discontent. After the civil war, human labor in the industries was replaced by machines that resulted in increased production capacity of the industries (Franklin, 1994). Economy A nationwide network of railroads was constructed that ensured goods were distributed throughout the country. New products were developed that met public demands. A new banking INDUSTRIALIZATION 3 system was established and together with investors offered the high amounts of money required by the business owners to expand their operations (Richardson, 2007). Political aspects With the changes brought about by the industrial revolution, political changes were inevitable. The legislators prioritized the interests of the business people and neglected the poor and the working class. Helping owners of the big businesses was more rewarding than helping the poor. The people became overly discontent with the politicians for they mainly helped their friends and gave contracts to those who supported them politically. Some of the leaders were also corrupt and accepted bribes (Franklin, 1994). Groups of people affected Industrialization affected the immigrants, farmers, women, middle and lower class, and African Americans. Industrial revolution enhanced farmers to increase their production due to the advancement in agricultural equipment and techniques. However, the presence of middlemen who took the bigger share of the sales meant farmers could not get high profits. The end of slavery also affected farmers in the South who relied on the slaves for the workforce. Before the civil war, most women used to be caretakers at home but after the civil war majority of the women were employed in the factories (Hunter, 1997). Following the Fourteenth Amendment that incorporated the word male in the constitution after the civil war, women contested for their rights. The women were granted the right to vote, something that they had been withheld from for long. The Immigrant workers got lower pay for similar jobs to American workers and were discriminated against in the workplace. Additional fees were charged on immigrant workers such as the tax for foreign miners imposed on the Chinese. The passing of passed the Chinese Exclusion INDUSTRIALIZATION 4 Act by the government in 1882 barred more Chinese from entering the US for ten years. Those already present were not entitled to American citizenship. The middle class included the owners of small businesses, factory managers, and office workers. They prospered enough to live a comfortable life (Franklin, 1994). The middle class also joined labor unions that protected them from exploitation by their employers. Lack of any benefits to the African-Americans led to segregation. There were no wage increments for the African-Americans who were working in the South. Therefore, the Southern region lagged behind in development as the markets could not expand. Effect of industrialization on the average American Worker The average working Americans had to work for long hours for a day in exchange for low wages. The working conditions were poor and competition for jobs increased as the population grew and more people migrated to the cities. Most of them stayed in apartment buildings where living conditions were poor. They lacked political representation as leaders came from the wealthy people who prioritized the interests of the business people (Richardson, 2007). Conclusion Industrialization after the civil war had an impact on almost every sector of the society ranging from social, economic, and political effects. Some of its effects were beneficial while others impacted negatively on the people but the cumulative effect was the growth of the economy and improved way of life.
