The health information technology and patient safety have played a significant role in the
ONC’s Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan. Its main
objective was to provide a platform to reduce medical errors in health sectors to improve the
welfare of citizens. When health information technology is fully integrated into health care
delivery organizations, facilitates potentially enormous improvements in health care quality and
safety. In the previous management, the health care delivery was not effectively conducted due
to lack of right modern information technology to offer quality service. However, the
implementation of information technology has improved health care quality delivery for patient
safety. This paper explains how health information technology and patient safety relate to the
ONC’s Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan.
The health information technology has provided a platform where Patient records can be
stored centrally and can be easily accessed from multiple locations. Essential health information
can be available when needed, as patients move within and between health care organizations
(Bender KW1, Kronstadt JL2, Wilcox R2, Tilson HH2., 2014).When a patient arrives at an
emergency room, providers can begin treatment with immediate access to patient records. The
quality of service delivery has improved as patients are attended following their health records to
give the required medication.
