Comparison of Economic Systems of the U.S. and Vietnam – Outline
Thesis: Since GDP is a good indicator of economic health, it can be hypothesized that
the United States has a stronger economy due to its larger population and varied industries.
I.

The main features of the U.S. economy are technologically advanced and highly
developed services sectors which represent about 80% of the country's total output.

II.

The Vietnamese economy is composed mainly of state-owned industries including
paper, textiles, foods, plastics, telecommunication, and furniture.

III.

Vietnam’s GDP has consistently grown over the years, whereas that of the U.S. has
sometimes stagnated during times of economic declines, such as during the 2008
recession.

IV.

According to the transparency international 2018 corruption perception index,
Vietnam ranks 117 while the United States ranks out 22 of a ranking of 180
economies.

V.

Vietnam has managed to sustain positive growth over the period. Its economy grew an
average rate of 7% between 1990 and the year 2000.

VI.

After comparing and contrasting the GDP and economic growth of the two countries
while taking into consideration factors such as governance, it is apparent that the U.S.
has a larger economy.

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS OF THE U.S. AND VIETNAM

3

Abstract
One of the most important phenomena of the 20th century was the rapid rise of living
standards all over the world. Many countries experienced rapid growth, and most emerging
economies are still experiencing accelerated growth while some established economies
experienced stable growth rates. The economies of the Vietnam Republic and that of the United
States are both significant players in the global economic arena, although with varying influence
and outcomes. The U.S. has the largest GDP in the world, while Vietnam is a low middle-income
country. By using GDP as the main measurement of economic performance, this study
established that the economy of the U.S. is much larger than that of Vietnam. While Vietnam has
experienced a much more significant economic growth compared to the U.S. over the last there
decades, it is yet to catch up with the world superpower. Various contributing factors were
explored, including the GDP of both countries, the major sectors of each economy and the
economic growth of both countries over a three-decade period. The difference in governance is
highlighted as it can promote or hamper corruption. The analysis provided the systematic
problems facing Vietnam as it strives to become a significant player in international economics.
This study is vital to policymakers and other stakeholders seeking to understand the underlying
factors among the two economies.
