Diverse populations can help individuals become more understanding. This can also help with an individual’s patience and willingness to accept others. According to Sincero, “personality is obtained through culture and not biology” (2012). I find this to be true because we often respond to who is around in our environment. There are certain things we would not say at church that we would say in the comfort of our own homes. In order to have a successful professional career, one must enhance his or her personal psychology by understanding the power in diverse populations. Ketih explains how his son took a course in college that illustrated great authors. Missing amongst those authors were individuals like Buddha and Xunzi (2011). Though his son had a great outlook on authors, the lack of diversity hindered how much more he could have been exposed to. When individuals learn to accept others more easily, the societies we live in will be filled with less tension. I feel as though issues arise because people spend more time looking at differences than they do looking at similarities. Once we are more accepting of others, our personal psychology would increase our careers and inner peace. Keith,K. D. (2011). Cross-Cultural Psychology: Contemporary Themes and Perspectives. Indianapolis, IN: Wiley. Sincero, Sarah, M. (Apr 5, 2012). Does Culture Affect our Personality? Retrieved Aug 07, 2019 from Explorable.com: https://explorable.com/culture-and-personality I saw the best article recently on social media of two pre school aged boys who are best friends. One is Caucasian and one is African American. The Caucasian boy swears that he and his best friend look exactly alike besides their hair so he cut his hair short like his friend so that their teacher could not tell them apart. (Holohan, 2017). I love this because it is a great example of how children are not born with prejudices and discriminatory thoughts. Although, I hope he learns that differences are okay, good even, and can be a positive learning experience in life. It is so different than how adults are. When I was in college, in Louisiana, I could not even count how many times people would ask me "what are you?"....umm, a person? .. I got asked so many times whether I was (not my words) "Indian, dot or feather".. I am Puerto Rican. Yes, I can see that I have some features that resemble women from the Middle East, but the fact that I was asked this multiple times a week from adults IN COLLEGE was incredible to me. Holohan, M.
