On January 12, 2015, the US Military Central Command (CENTCOM) was cyberattacked by a group that claims affiliation to ISIS known as the ISIS Cyber Caliphate. They
hacked the organization's social media pages, Twitter, and YouTube. However, its Facebook
remained untouched. On twitter they changed the cover photo to a black and white image that
had an ISIS militia in a head wrap and pro-ISIS words, saying ‘I love you ISIS.’ Furthermore,
they sent out threatening tweets one of which said ‘American soldiers, we are coming, watch
your back!’ ("CENTCOM's YouTube and Twitter Accounts Hacked by ISIS Group," 2018).
When it came to YouTube, they sent out two videos using the CENTCOM account of the ISIS
group activities. To each social platform, they posted private state documents that contained
security information of the US and names of the top US military persons. The incident happened
within the week the then president, Obama, was first addressing the nation on Cyber security
(Ackerman, 2017).
The situation was addressed by CENTCOM following the closure of both accounts. They
then released statements on the same. They stated that the act was a mere act of vandalism and
was not a serious attack, and the documents released were not going to affect the state in any
