Prompt: Explain the behavior of Austria in 1914 and the survival threat
Introduction
Power can be defined as the military strength of a nation or its influence in doing things.
Balance of power, therefore, is an international relations policy, which explains that global peace
can be achieved if the military strength of a given nation is distributed in such a way that no
country feels superior to the other. The theory states that if one nation is allowed to remain
stronger than others do, they will use their military might to attack the weaker nations. The more
vulnerable nations will, therefore, have to put their resources and efforts together in the response
of attacks from the stronger nations. The balance of power theory also explains that the weaker
nations have to balance their powers or find support from outside when they face these threats.
Balancing power, in this case, means that they should form alliances with other weaker nations
to fight against that threat. It also explains why various wars occurred.
The nations with strong economic and military powers are referred to as significant
powers. The WW1 involved two fronts; an alliance power that consisted of the US, France, Italy,
Britain, and Russia, and central powers that consisted of Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany,
and Ottoman Empire (Magagna, 2019). The behavior of Austria concerning the balance of power
and alongside these other nations was responsible for this war.
