The Biggest Power Technology Barrier in Unmanned Aircraft Systems
Currently, there are several issues associated with power on Unmanned Aircraft Systems
(UAV). However, battery life is among the most critical issue related to energy on UAVs that are
powered by batteries (Gertler, 2012). Besides, several platforms serve as a perfect example of
battery power deficiency. One of such examples includes a Cyber-hawk manufacture Falcon-8. It
is considered to be a quadcopter UAV with the ability to carry out a site survey on oil and gas
rigs, as well as railway systems. It is deemed to be an excellent platform for the survey through
the use of autonomous flight and Hi-definition camera arrays. However, the functioning of the
Falcon-8 is limited by the 30-minute flight period in every battery charge. If the flight period is
increased, the operation time for the battery increased, and when the flight time is reduced, the
operation time for the battery minimizes. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the flight period to
enhance the ability of the cell to function more.
Technological Development Required in Overcoming the Barrier
Several researchers have decided to develop numerous power forms that can be applied
in the enhancement of the flight period. This is done through the increase of the operating time
for the battery. Several examples can be given to prove the...
