ASE STUDY ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Gloria has recently graduated college and started a new job. Her coworkers seem very nice, and Gloria has gotten to know Lakeisha and Reggie the best.

Reggie is a friendly older man who often talks about his plans for retirement in five years. He likes to make people laugh but often jokes about his struggles to learn new programs and technology.

Gloria and Lakeisha have been assigned to work on a project together. Lakeisha is very organized and has prepared a list of to-do items along with due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate which partner will do each item. Gloria, who is more laid-back, feels a bit uncomfortable with this micromanaging from Lakeisha, who has only been at the job a few months longer than she has. Gloria wonders if Lakeisha thinks she is either lazy or stupid, and she does not look forward to working on this project. In the past, Gloria attempted to communicate her feelings with a co-worker; however, her coworker told Gloria that she needed to put her feelings aside and just do the work assigned to her.  As Gloria ponders having a conversation with Lakeisha, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks she might have to ask to be removed from this project.

Still, she and Lakeisha have connected because they are both single mothers of teenagers. Gloria confides in Lakeisha about her 16-year-old son who has started making poor choices and is currently grounded for sneaking out of the house and getting drunk at a party the night before a big exam.

The company recently informed the team that there will be a compliance test on new safety policies, which employees will need to pass in order to keep their jobs. The company has provided materials to study as well as optional practice exams. Gloria and Lakeisha have signed up to take the first practice test. Reggie, however, jokes that he will probably wait until the night before the test to read the material. As the date of the test approaches, Reggie becomes increasingly nervous. He makes frequent comments about how hard it is for him to learn a different way of doing the jobs that he has been doing for years, joking that “you can’t teach an old man new tricks.”

Introduction to Psychology

Given what you have learned in Chapter 3 about brain development and social
development, explain why Gloria’s son is making poor decisions.

It is paramount that in humans, there are various stages involved in brain and
social development. Apparently, teens tend to reason and behave differently from
adults. Teens tend to be more reactive and quick in decision making without considering
the consequences related to the decisions they make. This is highly manifested during
the brain development process. As such, Gloria's son makes some poor decisions in
life, such as sneaking out of the house and taking alcohol on the eve of examinations.
The teens' brains are developing and seem not to care about what will happen in the
future after missing examinations.
What specific strategies can Gloria use to help her son make better decisions?

Gloria can teach and help the son on virtuous decision-making skills. This can
only be achieved through the adoption of the following strategies:
Listening to the teen
Learn on how to listen to the son and the expectations that he has on the life
events. This means that Gloria should spend more time with the son and analyze the

reasoning of his son. She should help the son learn that there are consequences in life
for all decisions made.
Encourage the son to think critically
Encouraging the son to engage in thinking before acting. This is very crucial to
teens. They tend to act without first engaging their mind in deep thinking. This can help
the son in decision making (Myers, 2017).
Teach the son to learn from his mistakes
Teach the son on how to make inquiries or to seek for advice in some scenarios in life.
It is apparent that in life, everyone can make mistakes. Gloria should teach the son how
to learn from the mistakes that he makes in life.
Know his friends
Gloria should also make an effort to know the circle of friends that the son has.
This will allow her to know their behaviors and attributes. Always, bad Company ruins
good morals. Gloria should ensure that his son distances himself from the bad
Company.
Allow the son to have some control in life
Gloria should also help the son to make sound decisions in life and also to have
control over some activities in life. For instance, the son should know and learn about
doing well and wrong. As such, the son will start engaging himself in constructive
activities in life.

From what you have learned about human development and self-regulation, why do you
think these strategies will be effective?
In human development, most of the attributes and skills that humans possess are
learned. As such, the aforementioned strategies will help the son recover from poor decisions
making in life. For instance, allowing the teen to have some control in life will allow him to learn
of some harsh consequences that emanate from making poor decisions in life.

How does Reggie’s mindset affect the way that he prepares for the compliance test?

Reggie has set his mindset that he is old and can't be in a position to
comprehend new ideas, programs, or new technology in life. This is a negative mindset,
and he fails to prepare for the test in time claiming to prepare at the last day. Eventually,
he becomes nervous and worri...
