What is a more effective means of coercion against a state-trade restriction or a threat of
military action? GIVE AN EXAMPLE.
One of the means coercion is economic sanctions. Economic sanctions refer to financial
penalties that are used by counties against their self-governing state. There are a variety of
reasons as to why sanctions are imposed, this range from, social, political and military issues.
Economic sanctions have become one of the most preferred ways in which policymakers use to
respond to big geopolitical challenges such as conflict and terrorism. Economic sanctions refer
to the withdrawal of customary trade as well as financial relations for the purposes of foreign and
security policy.
Multinational bodies, as well as governments, use sanctions so as to alter with the
strategic decisions of the states and the non-state actors that pose as a threat for the international
behavior norms. Those who support the use of sanctions are of the idea that sanctions have
become more and more effective over the years and it is one of the most effective foreign policy
tools. For instance, in the past couple of years, the United States has expanded its use of
sanctions. The US has used sanctions against the adversaries such as Iran, Venezuela, Russia,
and Syria. Since the 9/11 attack the US has in place smart sanctions that are purposed towards
reducing the suffering of innocent people. This includes sanctions such as the travel bans, arms
embargoes, asset freezes, trade restrictions and foreign aid reduction among others.
There are a number of instances where the sanctions can be used. The United States and
the European Union has used sanctions foe a variety of reasons such as coercion, deter as well as
to shame the countries that pose as a threat to the nation. the use of sanctions is effective because
it is cheap and lowers the risk between war and diplomacy. When military action is not feasible,

the country can consider the use of sanctions instead. Leaders also use sanctions when they are
weighing the options that they have for punitive action. For instance, in 1990, the UN Secretary
Council used comprehensive sanctions, against Iraq, four days after Saddam Hussein invaded
Kuwait. The security council was against the use of military force until months after.
