Description
While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project.
A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:
- Title page
- Introduction section
- A comparison of research questions
- A comparison of sample populations
- A comparison of the limitations of the study
- A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research

Introduction
Patient falls are unfortunately common incidents which have hazardous outcomes such as
injuries and death (Kiyoshi-Teo, Carter & Rose, 2017) with the most affected being patients of
age 65 years and above (Kiyoshi-Teo, Carter & Rose, 2017; Quigley, Barnett & Friedman, 2014;
Guillaume, Crawford & Quigley, 2016) with the two most common injuries being hip fractures
and intracranial hemorrhages (Quigley, Barnett & Friedman, 2014). According to the National
Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) National Falls Toolkit Impact Evaluation, 5% and 3.5% of
falls in 2004 and 2005 respectively resulted in major injury in mental health. Some of the risk
factors involve “person-specific intrinsic risk factors, the physical environment and the riskiness
to a person’s own behavior” (Quigley, Barnett & Friedman, 2014: 51) and include history of
falls, generalized weakness, confusion or disorientation, difficulty with mobility or walking,
elimination problems, and temperature elevation (Quigley, Barnett & Friedman, 2014: 51).
The types of patients, staffing ratios, model of care and equipment availability have also
been identified as factors affecting patient falls (King, et.al, 2018). When these incidences occur,
the nurses are usually the second victims due to increased stress, guilt, concern for liability and
self-doubt about the quality of care offered these blame coupled with administration pressure to
reduce the falls and the use of falls as a nursing-sensitive quality indicator places huge
responsibilities on the nurses which may affect the nature of care the nurses provide to the fall
patients (King, et.al, 2018). This calls for evidence-based nursing strategies for implementation
in the adult inpatient medical-surgical units to prevent patient falls. This paper, therefore, will
analyze different literature to compare research questions, sample populations used blame
limitations of the study and propose recommendations for future research based on the research
question and topic.

Research questions
Quigley, Barnett & Friedman, (2014:53) sought to identify the needed tools that can be
used to translate evidence-based fall prevention and safe patient handling in the in-patient
psychiatry units. Research question to the study was, Is there any existent tools usable for patient
handling in the in-patient psychia...
