FUNDAMENTAL SECURITY DESIGN PRINCIPLES
FUNDAMENTAL SECURITY DESIGN PRINCIPLES
The two fundamental security design principles include economy of mechanism and fail-safe
default. The economy of mechanism illustrates that the security mechanisms should be small and
as simple as possible to help accept the fact that the system can protect resources. Fail-safe
default is also another security design principle which explains that the default situation is lack
of access (Green, B. et al. 2016). It means that access should always be based on permission
instead of exclusion. Fail-safe default explains that when in doubt, do not give consent. Both
economic mechanism and fail-safe default provide multiple layers of protection in a system.
The economy of the mechanism is suitable for all the software since it applies to any aspects of
the software, while the fail-safe default security design principle requires particular scrutiny. On
the other hand, the fail-safe default is used for a more subtle reason. The fail-safe default is also
apparent, as it illustrates that if one has to fail, then it must be done safely. As the fail-safe
default becomes apparent, the economy mechanism requires the emphasis on the protection
mechanism to ensure security error paths are designed and implemented. It, therefore, to acquire
information, through this, the errors will not be seen as one tries to use the system.
The economy mechanism implies that the protection of a system has to be obtained, while on the
other hand, the fail-safe default insists on the secure use of defaults. In economy mechanism, the
line-by-line inspection of the software, and also the physical examination of the hardware are
necessary, but only when the design is small and straightforward. As economy mechanism does
have significant restriction on system accessibility, the fail-safe default permits the access of
systems in certain conditions. Fail-safe default is based on the argument on why systems should
