Introduction: Importance of Statistical Significance in Criminal Justice
Research
As already stated in the preceding submission, research is pivotal to the scrutiny
and formulation of policy decisions in the criminal justice system. Research needs to be
conducted in order to collect information that mirrors the status quo within the criminal justice
system. For effective and necessary decisions to be made, analysis of data is needed. A huge part
of this analysis is the determination of statistical significance. In essence, statistical significance
is the probability that the cause and effect relationship of a given set of data is caused by
anything else other than chance (Greenland et al., 2016).. This determination is made via testing
the statistical hypothesis of the given data set and obtaining the p-value thereof. In general, a pvalue of 5% or below deems the data set statistically significant.
