Driving Miss Daisy is an American movie that was produced back in 1989 by Bruce
Beresford. It was scripted by Alfred Uhry, based on his play titled with the same name. The
leading actors in the movie are Daisy Werthan( real name: Jessica Tandy), Hoke Colburn (real
name: Morgan Freeman) and Boolie (real name: Dan Akoryd), who is Jessica’s son (Gale,
2016).
Daisy Werthan is a widow of a Jewish accent who is seventy two years and very
wealthy. She is a retired teacher living by herself in Atlanta, in Georgia. In her house there is
an African American house help named Idella (Esther Rolle).
This movie portrays Daisy’s racial point of view and nature. There is a great focus on
the life, religion family and friends of Daisy over a period of 25 years. Her feelings and
emotions are well portrayed within the movie as she interacts with various people. The movie
was a great success upon its release. Its total nominations totaled to nine and it won four of
those. These were the best picture, actress, makeup and screenplay.
Jessica initially drives a Chrysler Windsor of 1946 model. However the car crashes
and becomes a wreck. It is then that her son, Boolie, decides to buy her a new car, a Hudson
Commodore, and also hires a driver for her. The driver is Hoke Colburn. At first Miss Daisy
Is opposed to this idea of being driven around, and especially by a black person. Eventually,
though, she agrees to the idea and Hoke becomes her personal chauffer.
Miss Daisy and Hoke Colburn begin spending time together as he drives her to her
various destinations. During their travels, Miss Daisy gets to know of Hoke’s other skills and
abilities. When, later on, Idella dies, Miss Daisy opts to take care of her house herself. She
then employs Hoke as her chef to be cooking her meals. He therefore begins doing the two
different chores for her (Gale, 2016).
