Assignment 1 Response needed for discussion post Keeping mind the theories of arousal discussed in the text, what is the role of incongruity in the m otivation of behavior? Respond to two peers Discussion Response Needed 1 The role incongruity plays in the motivation of behavior is the likelihood that the stimulus that a person is experiencing at a given time will motivate the individual to respond in a positive or negative way. The text defines incongruity two ways either as a resolution or a variable. As a variable incongruity is defined as such, “dimension regarding the disparity of discrepancy between a single element in a stimulus array and other accompany elements or previous elements.” (Deckers, 2018) An example of this would be, if you hear a selection of music, this may produce in you, feelings of pleasure (like) because it a recognizable piece of music to you, or it may be a new song from your favorite singer or band. Now, lets take this point of view, say your favorite band changes their tonal quality to a different style, (variable) this in turn may lead you to either enjoy the new style or dislike it, which may cause to lose interest in the band all together. The motivation here would be whether to continue to follow the band or singer. Incongruity defined as a resolution “this is when incongruity is resolved or understood.” (Deckers, 2018) If the band or singer changes in tonal quality is something that also appeals to you, the conflict is resolved and you have come to a resolution that would be positive and it could lead to continually listing to the performer(s). Lets not forget to define arousal to bring it into perspective “Arousal mobilization, activation, or energization of energy in a person that occurs in preparation to or during actual behavior.” (Deckers, 2018) The listening to the music would be the behavior, that could lead an individual to change the style of music they would not normally enjoy. This is why some of us enjoy only certain genres or music like country and rock, while others enjoy a plethora of music ranging from classical to hard core heavy metal. Discussion Response Needed 2 The Hull-Spence theory states that drive (tension or arousal) triggers both weak and strong responses which in turn intensifies behaviors. (Deckers, 2018). For example, when we complete an exercise routine our drive (tension or arousal) for water is strong and this tension boosts our behavior in the search for water. The cusp catastrophe theory says that our performance is based on two interaction: physiological (somatic-actual feelings of anxiety) and cognitive anxiety. When a player is at its lowest physiological arousal (no pressure to win the game) cognitive anxiety is slightly improved in performance but when the player has high physiological arousal (pressure to perform to win the game) cognitive anxiety declines (Deckers, 2018). Arousal biased competition theory arousal favors the information that we are focused on. The arousal is characterized as a low and high priority. Information that has a high priority is focused on more compared to information that is considered low priority such as ignoring my cell phone when I am completing this discussion. Processing efficiency theory depends on our working memory. The more I worry about completing this discussion the less working memory is available which is declining my performance. Attentional control theory states that anxiety affects our performance by inhibiting our ability to pay attention to stimuli and responses that are not relevant to our goal (Deckers, 2018). All of these theories have one thing in common and that is arousal can influence our behaviors and performance. The role that incongruity has in the motivation of behavior is properly matching our schemas to our behaviors. Just as we do with humor and music. Music and jokes are enjoyed when the elements for those domains fit into a particular schema. Making jokes at a funeral is not congruent with the environment of a funeral. Wearing rain boots and raincoats (behavior) when it is not raining outside is not congruent when the weather outside is sunny and hot. The category of arousal (physiological or psychological) and the level of intensity of arousal dictates whether our behavior is incongruent or not. Deckers, L. (2018). Remember to cite sources. 1. Have you ever experienced taste aversion? If so: a. How long after eating the food did you become ill? b. How long has your taste aversion existed? Weeks, months, or years? c. How could you overcome the taste aversion for the particular food? Do you even want to? 2. Describe the situation in which you experienced heightened arousal. For example, you were auditioning for a school play, interviewing for a job, giving a speech, etc. How did arousal affect your behavior?

Keeping mind the theories of arousal discussed in the text, what is the role of incongruity in
the motivation of behavior?
The theories of arousal assert that a person’s performance is influenced by their arousal
level. Hull (1943) in the Drive theory of arousal states that performance and arousal share a
linear relationship where as one increases so does the other. Yerkes and Dodson (1908) in their
Inverted 'U' theory assert that a person’s optimal performance occurs when the individual reaches
their optimal level of arousal while the catastrophe theory of arousal asserts that a person’s
performance rapidly declines when they experience a high level of somatic and cognitive
anxiety.
Incongruity on the other hand occurs when a person experiences or is subjected to
something that is far from their ideal. Incongruity has the effect of motivating a person’s
behavior in an effort to eliminate the state. Based on the theories of arousal, incongruity
heightens a person’s arousal as it drives them to work hard and eliminate the non-deal state. An
example of a case of incongruity is when a person realizes that they have gained a lot of weight
which negatively affects their self-image. In order to eliminate the present state which is not
ideal, the person will be highly motivated to work out and do all that it takes to eliminate the
excess weight and get back to their ideal size. Incongruity therefore motivates a person to
formulate plan, improve their performance until they have successfully eliminated the ch...
