Mens rea and actus reus are two terms that are opposite to each other in meanings. Mens
rea can be defined as the purpose or aim of committing a crime. In the criminal justice world, it’s
simply referred to as the intent. It’s wise to take note that mens rea is not similar to the motive of
a crime. Actus reus on the hand refers to the action itself of committing a crime (Doherty, &
Steinberg, 2016). Different crimes have different actus reus therefore it’s not a requirement in
the law that crimes possess a specific actus reus. The word, when translated from Latin means a
guilty act. Actus reus therefore it’s the physical movement of the body which should be
