From about 3 million years ago, mankind survived by either conducting hunting and
gathering activities or producing their food through agricultural practices. Hunting entailed
stalking or chasing edible wild animals and capturing them, then preparing them as food while
gathering usually focused on the collection of wild fruits and vegetables. Although hunting and
gathering was the most common practice during the Stone Age period, the change from this
method to the settled agricultural societies was promoted by the discovery of farming tools and
irrigation methods. While most communities continued practicing hunting and gathering benefits
of the settled agricultural societies such as the reduced risk of starvation and ease in accessing
food made it a more superior method of accessing food.
